Enjoy Your Next Ski Vacation Without Breaking the Bank

When you're taking the entire family along on vacation, you may find that you're on a tight budget. As expensive as skiing can be, there are ways to take ski weekend vacation with your family and not break the bank. Here's a few tips that will help you keep the costs down.

Skiing is a popular family sport, which means that special deals for family budgets aren't hard to find. Most ski resorts offer packages that include children under 10 or 12 free or at reduced cost. You can take advantage of family day passes for the ski lift, or deals that allow you to have kids stay free in your cabin.

Save Money on Meals

There are other ways to save money while you're actually on vacation. Skip the meals out and buy groceries for the week where the locals do. Most ski lodges include at least basic kitchen facilities so that you can prepare simple lunches and dinners. If not, you can still stock up on easy fix lunch and breakfast foods, and only pay for dinners out.

Bring Along Entertainment

One of the most unexpected budget breakers during a family ski vacation is keeping the kids entertained between hitting the slopes. Avoid dribbling away quarters and dollars by packing the kids' favorite games, electronic and otherwise.

Choose Smaller Lodges

Shop around for the best price. The most well-known lodge in the area could be priced nearly twice as high as another less-advertised lodge nearby. Find the best price you can get without compromising too much on the amenities.

What If Not Everyone Is A Skier?

What if everyone in your family is NOT an avid skier? Choosing a lodge that offers nothing but skiing will almost guarantee that some members of your family will be bored at some point during your vacation. The best way to avoid that is to find a ski lodge that has other activities that will interest and entertain the non-skiers.

Many ski resorts offer far more than skiing activities. At Smugglers' Notch in Vermont, for instance, you can choose from a wide variety of outdoor and indoor recreation activities. Your best bet to make sure that everyone in your family has fun things to do while on vacation is to choose a ski lodge in a resort area that offers many other possibilities for recreation. And that's really all there is to it! With a little (very little) planning, you can pull together any ski vacations that will please your whole family AND keep your budget in shape.
